Social Skills Program
| |
Valley Achievement Center offers a structured classroom environment for individuals with in the autism spectrum in the Social Skill after school program. We teach social skills, communication and appropriate classroom behavior with a student teacher ratio of 3:1 or 6:1 based on an intake assessment and the functioning level of the student. Students are expected to function within a group. This program is offered 5 days a week from 2pm to 5pm and serves students ages 6-17. Each day is filled with different activities to encourage the children’s growth in these areas. They are taught through social stories, role-play and classroom activities such as: idiom lessons (teaching the understanding of idioms and how to use them within their own communication), sports (teaching sportsmanship), and board games (teaching sharing, compromise and turn taking). Along with their daily activities, they are taken into the community once a week. This allows them to practice the skills they are learning within the school and generalize that skill into unfamiliar environments. This program is beneficial for children who struggle with social skills and are striving to improve their self-help (hygiene, dressing etc) and social skills (organization, peer interaction etc). Each student is placed in a classroom but, has an individual program plan set up to achieve each of their individual goals. The goal is for them to obtain social skills and be productive in our community. Our focus is teaching: Is your child right for the Social Skills after school program? Prerequisite skills for the Social Skills after school program include:
